Biodiversità marina a rischio nei mari europei: l’appello degli scienziati
“Desolanti”: così sono state definite le condizioni in cui versano i mari europei. A lanciare l’allarme e la critica a l’UE sono stati 200 scienziati, a pochi giorni dalla riunione a Bruxelles in cui verrà decisa la linea comune da seguire sulla tutela della biodiversità marina e non solo alla COP15 di Kunming.
Uno dei punti principali, sui cui si concentra l’attenzione, è la scarsa utilità delle aree protette istituite. Soltanto l’1% dei mari europei sarebbe realmente protetto da aree come queste mentre il restante 99% sarebbe esposto ad attività industriali di ogni tipo. Gli effetti più devastanti sarebbero dovuti della pesca a strascico, considerata la pratica più distruttiva e ad alta intensità di carburante, ed usata nel 59% delle aree marine protette. La richiesta degli scienziati è quella di creare nuove aree protette in cui sia vietata del tutto la pesca. Ciò sarebbe in linea con il target già fissato anche nella Strategia UE per la biodiversità al 2030, con un obiettivo del 10% dei mari europei sotto questa alta forma di protezione. Le aree protette off limits per i pescherecci registrerebbero infatti tassi di ripristino della fauna marina 6 volte maggiori del normale e del 20% superiori in termini di aumento della biodiversità.
