Nuova misura dell’UE per gli ecosistemi protetti: stop alla pesca di fondo
La Commissione europea negli scorsi giorni ha chiuso 87 zone sensibili agli attrezzi per la pesca di fondo nelle acque dell’UE dell’Atlantico nord-orientale. Il nuovo regolamento ha l’obiettivo di proteggere 57 ecosistemi vulnerabili, preservare la natura e ripristinare la biodiversità.
La misura, nata anche dal suggerimento degli scienziati del Consiglio internazionale per l’esplorazione del mare (CIEM), prevede la chiusura di 16.419 km² di superficie totale riservati alla protezione degli ecosistemi marini vulnerabili al di sotto dei 400 metri: l’1,16% delle acque dell’UE dell’Atlantico nord-orientale. Le chiusure riguardano navi dotate di attrezzi di fondo, con reti a strascico, draghe, reti da posta di fondo, palangari di fondo, nasse e trappole.
Il Commissario per l’Ambiente, gli oceani e la pesca, Virginijus Sinkevičius, si è dichiarato soddisfatto della misura: “I nostri oceani e la nostra pesca dipendono da ecosistemi marini sani. Chiudendo il 17% dell’area compresa tra 400 e 800 metri di profondità delle acque dell’UE dell’Atlantico nord-orientale agli attrezzi per la pesca di fondo, manteniamo il nostro impegno di proteggere e ripristinare la vita marina e dopo 4 anni finalmente attuiamo una delle principali disposizioni del regolamento sull’accesso in acque profonde. Sono grato per l’impegno – conclude – e gli sforzi compiuti dal settore della pesca per accompagnare questo nuovo capitolo della conservazione degli oceani”.
La norma entrerà in vigore dopo la pubblicazione nella Gazzetta ufficiale dell’Unione europea e sarà immediatamente applicabile a tutte le navi degli Stati membri dell’UE e dei paesi terzi che operano nelle acque dell’UE.
