Palermo, SopMare e USA insieme per recuperare i corpi degli aviatori del Boeing B-17 CLICCA PER LE FOTO
A quasi 80 anni dall’inabissamento nel golfo di Palermo del Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Devils From Hell” del 353rd Bomber Squadron l’Agenzia Governativa Statunitense DPAA (Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency) ha avviato una campagna di ricerca dei resti degli aviatori dispersi in azione, per identificarli e dare loro sepoltura.
L’attività di ricerca si avvarrà della collaborazione della Soprintendenza del Mare della Regione Siciliana che opererà a fianco del DPAA con l’interesse di confermare l’identità del relitto e di testimoniare il valore culturale del sito e restituire memoria del conflitto alla città di Palermo. L’attività prevede scavi e campionamenti con strumentazioni avanzate e il supporto della RPM Nautical Foundation e del team dei subacquei altofondalisti della SDSS (Società di Documentazione dei Siti Subacquei).
“L’occasione di riscrivere una delle pagine più tristi della storia di Palermo – sottolinea il Soprintendente del Mare, Ferdinando Maurici – sarà tanto più importante quanto più si avvicina all’anniversario dell’operazione “Husky”, lo sbarco alleato in Sicilia, del quale il prossimo anno ricorrerà l’ottantesimo“.
