Unesco in missione nel “cimitero dei relitti”: trovate anfore e navi romane
Un viaggio nel tempo tra relitti di navi romane e centinaia di anfore antiche: è quello che hanno intrapreso gli archeologi subacquei impegnati nella missione dell’Unesco per mappare il Banc des Esquerquis, quel tratto di mare tra Italia e Tunisia conosciuto anche come “il cimitero dei relitti”.
Dall’antichità ai tempi moderni, una moltitudine di barche, dalle antiche navi mercantili alle navi della seconda guerra mondiale, si è arenata qui a causa delle rocce affioranti e delle forti correnti che interessano questo ampio tratto di mare, una delle rotte più trafficate del Mediterraneo, ma anche una delle più pericolose.
L’obiettivo della missione, durata 14 giorni, cui hanno collaborato ricercatori provenienti da Algeria, Croazia, Egitto, Spagna, Francia, Italia, Marocco e Tunisia era migliorare la mappatura dell’area, al fine di proteggere questo importante patrimonio sottomarino. A bordo della nave Alfred Merlin , fornita dalla Francia, l’esplorazione dei relitti è stata effettuata da due veicoli subacquei a pilotaggio remoto, droni d’alto mare in grado di raggiungere aree inaccessibili ai subacquei.
Il primo robot, Arthur, progettato specificamente per gli scavi archeologici in acque profonde, ha documentato 3 relitti di navi romane scoperti dalle spedizioni americane negli anni 90. Gli archeologi hanno rilevato che lo stato di conservazione di questi relitti è praticamente lo stesso di quasi 30 anni; non sono stati alterati da sedimentazione, bioerosione o attività umane. I nuovi dati raccolti, grazie a foto e video in alta risoluzione, consentono di caratterizzare e datare il carico delle navi.
Il secondo robot, Hilarion, ha fornito ulteriori informazioni su questa zona, nonché sulla potenziale posizione di altri resti archeologici. Ha dunque documentato la presenza di altri 3 relitti che vanno dall’antichità al periodo contemporaneo (XIX secolo), oltre a diverse altre aree di interesse archeologico.
”Questa missione si conclude con notevoli progressi e ci conferma che il Banc des Esquerquis è di grande interesse per il patrimonio culturale subacqueo mondiale” ha commentato il Direttore Generale dell’UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay.
